Porter's PLT Group
We brainstormed possible project ideas. They included:
1. Current/Recent events in US history such as 9-11 memories
2. Rights of juveniles
3. Current Habeas Corpus issues in US.
Foremost our plan includes getting input from students on projects that would interest them.
After our brainstorming session we concluded that the rights and responsibilities of students/juveniles would probably be the most interesting to students. We ran out of time to come up with specifics for all the projects. Therefore, we share the project on the "rights and responsibilities of students" as listed below.
US Supreme Court decisions affecting the rights of juveniles. Cases may include but not limited to:
A. Brown v. BOE 1954 - school integration
B. Gideon v. Wainwright 1963 - right to an attorney
C. In re Gault 1967 - juvenile rights vs. adult rights such as Miranda rights, right to attorney, and right to question witnesses
D. Tinker v. DesMoines 1969 - freedom of speech for students
E. NJ v. TLO 1985 - search and seizure in school setting
F. Hazelwood v. Kuhlmier 1988 - First Amendment freedom of speech(censorship of student newspaper in public high school)
Student activities to include:
1. Research historic Supreme Court cases and current cases involving the rights of juveniles.
2.Make a survey to solicit information regarding what the student body knows about their specific rights.
3.Students analyze survey data and share with student body via webpage, displays in common areas ie. bulletin boards, electronic sign board near student cafeteria .
4.Create posters/bulletin boards to share/inform students about juveniles and the law - rights and responsibilities
5. Create public service type announcements that can be communicated via the daily announcements and the electronic signboard near cafeteria.
This is a work in progress and group members will be adding ideas and suggestions as they begin to solicit feedback from the student body.
